Description
It grows all over the world, especially in urban areas and along roadsides on dry sandy soils. It forms dense tufts, sometimes pads. It contains photo protective pigments, which are a useful adaptation for a bright Antarctic environment. It can tolerate high levels of pollution compared to other mosses. It can be found in industrial areas, along highways and on tailings and waste associated with coal and heavy metal mining. It occurs on various substrates: earth, rocks, wood, humus, roofs, sand, cracked sidewalks. It is most common on exposed, compact, mineral, dry, gravelly soils. It is a dioecious species that reproduces sexually and asexually.
