The church in Zalog

The church in Zalog

Basic data

The branch church in Zalog is dedicated to St. Martin.

Description

The church of St. Martin in Zalog stands on Gorica, as we villagers call the hill, where the Temenica flows into the Krka. Around the church is the cemetery belonging to the villages of Zalog and Loke, which is surrounded by a wall. On the north side there is an octagonal chapel of the Jelovšek family from the nearby collapsed Breitanau Castle. The church and its tomb chapel, surrounded by the cemetery wall and set on the village hill, are an example of a simple and beautiful architectural solution that, regardless of the artistic value of the church, creates a feeling of belonging in the landscape. The year of construction or consecration is not known, but the Zalog church was mentioned by Bishop Byzantium in 1581 in church history. There had probably been a chapel there before the church was built.
