Straža was first mentioned in written sources in 1250. Mary's church, which stands at the cemetery in Dolenja Straža, is not mentioned in older sources, but the sign on the lintel of the main portal shows that it was consecrated in 1960. The credit for the construction work goes to Wolfgang Daniel Brenner, whom Valvasor mentioned in 1869 as the owner of Luknja Castle and was introduced in the chronicle of the Prečna parish as the first church caretaker of the Church of Mary. Mary's Church in Straža is one of the most significant monuments of the Baroque art in Lower Carniola, the importance of which goes beyond the narrow local and regional framework.
