The church in Prečna

Basic data

The parish church in Prečna is dedicated to St. Anton of Padua.

Description

The parish church in Prečna, which is located on a slight slope above the Novo mesto – Straža local road, was built according to plans by the architect Josip Vancaš from Sarajevo. Preparations for the building began in 1894, when the priest Anton Šmidovnik announced that instead of the old church of St. Elias, they would build a new church dedicated to St. Anton of Padua. The new church was consecrated on June 13, 1910 by Bishop Anton Bonaventura Jeglič from Ljubljana, and already a week later the first parish blessing was held in St. Anton.

The St. Anton Church from Padua in Prečna became one of the first large churches to be built in Lower Carniola in the first quarter of the 20th century, replacing older medieval buildings.
