Common pochard

Features

The common pochard belongs to a large group of ducks characterised by the fact that they search for food by diving – they are thus known as the diving ducks. The common pochard's silhouette is very characteristic, as its long beak extends into a high and steep forehead, ending with a slightly pointed, raised crown.

Description

The males are grey and black throughout their body, and their head is brown. The female is similarly coloured, but its colours are faded in comparison with the males. The common pochards nest both on large and small wetlands and on modestly overgrown shores. In Europe, they represent a widespread species, while in Slovenia they are considered a rare species of nesting birds. Among overwhelming species of ducks in Slovenia, the common pochards are considered the most numerous species of diving ducks.
