Description
It is a strongly hairy glistening black fly with a stocky body. It has extremely short sensors. Females have smaller eyes and a much smaller head than males. It occurs on forest edges, in open places and in gardens. It is common everywhere. They can appear in large numbers as early as spring. They also feed on leaf waste and other plant debris and are therefore also useful.
