Common heath Ematurga atomaria

Common heath

Features

Adults often fly during the day and linger among the grass, visiting flowers as well. They can be observed from May to June, occasionally also in August. Caterpillars are quite variable, greenish or gray-brown, found on some heathers (Ericaceae) and legumes (Fabaceae). In danger, they become numb and imitate a branch (mimicry).

Species Insect
Living space Bright forest, Meadow, Treeline
Size 22-30 mm wingspan

Description

Adults: the wings are mostly yellow, whitish or gray-brown, with pronounced, brown bands and tiny stripes, and therefore mesh-marbled. The bands can be very wide (especially those at the edge of the wings) or narrow, occasionally merging with each other, so some shapes are almost entirely dark brown.
