Description
It is not difficult to distinguish the males and the females at first glance. The male has a reddish brown head with a gray nape. Their backs and the tails are brown and the tips of their tails are white. Their wings are blue and black with white shoulders. Their abdomen is reddish-brown. Their beaks are wide and strong which allows us to recognize them with ease. The females are slightly smaller, more pale, and tend to have slightly lighter coloring than the males.
The basic nutrition of the hawfinch consists of insects, seeds from leafy forest trees, cherry pits and buds, and, in winter, they frequently visit bird feeders where they use their strong beaks to crack open sunflower seeds.
The hawfinch frequents leafy and mixed forests and parks. They nest in Slovenia from April to July. Their wingspan can reach 32 cm.
