Description
They are completely black. The male has a red stripe on his head extending back from his beak on the upper part of his head while the female only has a stripe on the back part of her head. These birds do not migrate. They nest in the cavities that they carve in the old trunks of pine, beech, oak, ash and birch trees. They have one litter consisting of 3-6 eggs. They feed on the insects and larvae found in bark and in trees. Their favourite food is the large black forest ant. The wingspan of adult birds ranges from 64 to 78 cm.
