Dark giant horsefly Tabanus sudeticus

Features

The length of the specimen is from 20 to 25 mm. The eyes have a uniform dark brown. The rear hind rings are light brown on the sides, the middle with a whitish, forward-pointing triangle.

Description

A very common species near cattle and horses. They fly with a very loud buzzing. They suck mainly on cattle and horses, and mostly avoid humans. The female lays whitish eggs on the plants in moist places. The cylindrical whitish larva lives in the soil and feeds on rotting plant debris, partly with small animals. He injects poison into their jaws to kill them and then eats them.
