Gold, green, blue and other sorts of crow, today named roller (Coracias garrulus). Regardless of the name, for us this bird has become extremely rare in the last years. Nevertheless, individual pairs occasionally nest in the north-east of Slovenia. Another opportunity to observe them is during a random encounter of these beautiful birds as they migrate across our villages.
One May afternoon, more precisely on 23 May, I was drawn to the freshly cut meadows, which provide food for many birds.
In addition to the birds, I could also spot a few rabbits and a curious roe deer, which quickly took off towards a safer place.
Then a bird flew through the treetops, which I definitely did not expect to find there. Luckily, the camera was ready and I quickly made a documentary clip.
The bird was catching prey on the cut meadows, then flew across the meadow and field to a dried tree. When I got home and looked at the videos, I realized that it had actually caught its prey, and that made the story all the more interesting.
Nesting of the European roller in our places would genuinely be quite a sensation for us birders.
We continued to visit the area for another few days, but the birds were no longer in sight.
