Description
The middle spotted woodpecker mostly keeps to trees, whose crust predominantly consists of insects and their larvae, so it searches for food there. Occasionally it also eats tree juice. Male and female middle spotted woodpeckers do not differ in terms of their appearance. The upper side of their head is red, their abdomen is whitish, and the lower part of their abdomen and their tail are bright-red. During the mating season, this species will dig a hole in a trunk or thicker branch, of the diameter of about 5 cm, in which it makes its nest.
Its song is a slow, nasal gvayk gvayk gvayk gvayk gvayk and the calls include a fast kik kekekekek.
