Whinchat Saxicola rubetra

Whinchat

Features

In Slovenia, the whinchats nest both on wet and flooded meadows and on dry meadows and pastures. In autumn they fly to Africa, where they winter. In spring, when their living space becomes invigorated by the colours of the flowering plants, they return to these places and build nests on the ground, which is usually well hidden under a bush.

Description

The whinchat feeds on insects. The whinchat’s throat and chest are reddish-ochre, gradually turning into dull pink on the belly. Its yellow-brown back and tail is covered in black freckles, and its legs are black. The males have almost black faces and a distinct white line above their eyes. The latter is the same colour as the chest of the female, whose face is brownish. The male of this closely related species is recognised by a white collar and the absence of the white stripe above the eyes.
