Tipula is a very large insect genus in the fly family Tipulidae. There are 15,000 species inhabiting freshwater and terrestrial habitats worldwide.

Description

They all have very long and fragile legs. The male has a swollen tip on the abdomen, and the female has a pointed ovary that is used to push the eggs into the ground. Their body color is usually gray, brown or dull yellow, rarely black. Adults generally do not feed, and larvae feed on decaying organic material. Both larvae and adult specimens are important in the food of larger animals.
