The purple heron lies in wait for food well hidden in the reeds or amongst underwater vegetation. If it is threatened, it stands up straight and tall and sways to the rhythm of the swaying reeds.

Description

The purple heron is brownish, has a red chest, red and black abdomen, and a gray and red back. Two long, black feathers hang from its neck. The wingspan ranges from 120 to 152 cm. Due to its protective color, it can be very difficult to spot it. The purple heron is a rare summer species, the nesting cycle of which remains unconfirmed in Slovenia.
