Description
The European green woodpecker is distinguished from the strikingly similar grey-headed woodpecker by size (the European green woodpecker is about 5 centimeters larger) and black coloured feathers that extend from the beak to the middle of the head on the cheeks. The females have a reddish upper part of the head.
The European green woodpecker is not so attached to the forests and resides mainly in a more open cultural landscape with bright forests, parks, gardens and orchards, where it nests. In Slovenia, it is a widespread and frequent year-round species.
